HealthTech Programmes Policy (NICE)

The NICE HealthTech programme provides 2 types of guidance: HealthTech Guidance (HTG) and Interventional Procedures Guidance (IPG).

HealthTech Guidance

  • HealthTech is often used interchangeably with 'medtech'
  • NICE HealthTech guidance evaluates non-medicine technologies
  • It combines the former NICE Diagnostics Assessment programme, Interventional Procedures programme and Medical Technologies Evaluation programme
  • Recommendations are made based on assessment of clinical and cost effectiveness of HealthTech products

Interventional Procedures Guidance

  • Interventional procedures involve making an incision, a puncture or entry into a body cavity, or using ionising, electromagnetic or acoustic energy
  • Recommendations are made based on assessment of the efficacy and safety of new, significantly modified or established procedures. Although some interventional procedures can involve implanting or using a health technology, the guidance and recommendations are about the procedure

Lifecycle Approach

NICE develop guidance, and the types of recommendation made, reflect what stage a technology or procedure is at in the lifecycle covering; early-use, routine use and existing use.

DDICB Policy on NICE Outputs remains current i.e. all other technologies not covered by the MedTech Funding Mandate are not commissioned and require the submission and subsequent approval of a business case as per the HealthTech Programmes Policy.
